65,000 Deaths Worst Case Scenario
16/07/2009 - Up to 65,000 people in the UK could die from swine flu if the pandemic achieves it worst possible potential, the government warned today.
The chief medical officer, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, said that in the worst case scenario 30% of the UK population could be infected by the H1N1 virus, with 65,000 killed.
The best case scenario is that 5% of the population contract the virus, with 3,100 deaths.
The estimates were released as the government confirmed that 29 people had died in the UK after contracting swine flu.
Swine flu vaccine will be fast-tracked
13/07/2009 - A swine flu vaccine will be fast-tracked for use in Britain within five days once it is developed, and 130 million doses are on order.
The Department of Health expects to have enough vaccine this year to give it to half the population. Further supplies will be available if needed. Each person will need two doses of the vaccine, unless one single jab is found to provide high rates of immunity.
The first doses specific to the H1N1 swine flu virus are set to arrive in September and could be given regulatory approval in less than a week. Full details from timesonline.co.uk
